Creating a mandala of positivity

This month we are working with the kids in a theme: mandala. A mandala stands for positivity, peace, togetherness, love and much more. In our Art Therapy offer for the kids, this month we use the mandala as a way to connect them more with themselves, with their emotions and feelings, with each other and with the world.

At each centre we support we work towards individual and/or joint goals. Last Saturday at Mosoj we worked towards positive communication and collaboration by creating a “sun full of positivity”.

An important point of our activities is to help the kids work on their own creation to express their own feelings.

Therefore each child received a mandala which they decorated as desired hence becoming their own creation.

Once each kid was done with their creation we gathered all the mandalas to create a colourful sun. From a few simple materials and their creativity they together managed to create a work that has meaning to all of them. The next step was for them to write down words that they think would fit in a sun full of positivity. Their challenge was to exchange during in order to reflect together on the step: “what is a positive wordg to see the children working together and how they all took their own task seriously and meticulously, but especially as a team: Fabienna and Jadiel gathered and position the mandalas while Elba wrote down all the words and Lucy and Jhanet where cutting the coloured paper for Elba to write down the words on.?”, “what does positivity mean to me?”, “which positive word do I know” and so on. Words such as friendship, tolerance, love, peace, solidarity, honesty, art and smile were chosen by the kids. It was inspiring to see the children working together and how they all took their own task seriously and meticulously, but especially as a team: Fabienna and Jadiel gathered and position the mandalas while Elba wrote down all the words and Lucy and Jhanet where cutting the coloured paper for Elba to write down the words on.

Then they all took part in putting the artwork together and decoration was even made, enhancing the power of the words, giving them more importance. Seeing how proud they were of their work was something precious! A sun full of positivity now hangs in the common room reminding them of the strength and positivity or doing more together, of caring for and respecting one another, and of the power of a positive approach to their activities.
